News Release

Every Marietta City School made AYP in 2009.

2009 AYP Report

MARIETTA SCHOOLS
 DISTRICT
MEETS NCLB AYP STANDARDS

All schools except Marietta Middle School make AYP

Marietta, GA - Marietta City Schools (MCS) announced today that the school district overall made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in 2008-09. All schools with the exception of Marietta Middle School (MMS) also made AYP.

“The fact that the Marietta City school district overall made AYP is significant. Marietta High School’s graduation rate of 83.4 percent is also significant because the graduation rate is an important additional indicator for AYP at the secondary level,” said Dr. Emily Lembeck, MCS Superintendent. “I applaud the work done by the teachers and administrators throughout the school system at every level. Achieving AYP is a testament to their professionalism and dedication to meeting the needs of every child, especially given the challenging economic stresses faced by many this year.”

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, signed into law in January 2002, requires states to set target goals for Adequate Yearly Progress based on student achievement data. States are required to “raise the bar” for AYP each year to meet the NCLB goal of having all students proficient in reading and math by the 2013-14 school year.

In order to highlight the achievement levels of certain groups of students and hold schools accountable for closing any achievement gaps, NCLB requires every school, school district, and state to sort test results by the racial/ethnic category, disability, limited English proficiency, and socioeconomic status. Although all students in a school are expected to meet target AYP goals, if one student group does not meet the goals, the school will not make AYP.

AYP requires schools to meet standards in three areas: Test Participation (for both Mathematics and Reading/English Language Arts), Academic Performance (for both Mathematics and Reading/English Language Arts), and an Additional Indicator. To meet AYP, each school and system must meet the following criteria:

95% Participation: Each school, as a whole, and all student groups with at least 40 members, must have a participation rate of 95% or above on selected state assessments in Reading/English Language Arts and Mathematics;

Annual Measurable Objective: Each school, as a whole, and each student group with at least 40 members must meet or exceed the State’s Annual Measurable Objective (AMO) regarding the percentage of students scoring proficient or advanced on State assessments in Reading/English Language Arts and Mathematics;

Additional Indicator: Each school, as a whole and as subgroups, must meet the standard or show progress on an additional indicator.

MCS Additional Indicators

  • Elementary/middle grades: attendance
  • Secondary grades: graduation rate
    • Marietta High School – 2008-09 graduation rate: 83.4%

For more information about AYP, contact Dr. Debra Pickett, MCS Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction at 770.422.3500.
